Day 2 and 3

Day 2 was horror movie free, unfortunately.  The niece and nephews were over, so I didn’t have a chance.  They’re 3, 5 and 8.  I don’t think either of them would have been able to handle very much scare or blood.  My other niece, also 3, on the other hand, can watch ANYTHING.  She LOVES scary movies.  It’s awesome to watch her looking at the Netflix horror category and wanting to watch them all!  I need a good list of horror movies that won’t make her parents too uncomfortable to know she’s watched.

In the previous post, I had a list of movies I would choose for my next viewing.  I kinda strayed from that today.  This morning, when the kids left, I turned on Netflix and saw Apartment 143, and decided to try it.

APARTMENT 143
Meh.  Another Paranormal Entity knock off.  That being said, the premise was unique..ish.  I was unimpressed, though, with the “ghost”.  Or whatever it was supposed to be.  A couple of unveiling scenes were just too ridiculous to take this movie seriously.  I don’t scare easily, and this movie doesn’t make it easy.

After that went off, I turned on the tv and saw SyFy was showing Ghost Voyage.  I thought I’d seen it before, so I tuned in the last 30 minutes to check.  I had seen it before, but coming up next was Haunted High, which I hadn’t seen.  So I stuck around.  Seems there’s a marathon today.  Too bad my horror loving niece wasn’t here today.

HAUNTED HIGH
It wasn’t bad.  There were some good acting, some mediocre acting, and some terrible acting.  But that’s to be expected.  But, it still felt more Disney channel than HBO.  I don’t know, maybe it was because it was set in a high school and the villain was, yet again, ridiculous.

I really should stop expecting SyFy movies to be anything less than ridiculous, if today has taught me anything.

HOUSE OF BONES
The final SyFy movie was something similar to Apartment 143..but..different.  Ok, let me explain.  The crew of a Ghost Hunters-type television show goes to a house that turns out to be haunted.  By what?  Search me.  I couldn’t really get into it enough to follow exactly what was going on.

Both Haunted High and House of Bones probably would have had a good amount of gore if they hadn’t been on SyFy, but we all know that gore does not a good movie make.  On that note, I’ve read some reviews and decided to not watch Bordello of Blood at this time.  I’ve got other titles that make precedence.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN VS. ZOMBIES
I saw Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter in theaters, and wanted to check out Asylum’s mockbuster.  It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be; Vampire Hunter was better, there’s no doubt about it, but for once The Asylum didn’t ruin it.  And they only had one God-awful one-liner, as opposed to having one every 2 seconds.  Nothing new was brought to the genre, but clichés weren’t rampant, either.  All in all, it wasn’t a bad way to spend an evening.

WISMASTER 2
The first Wishmaster had a lot going for it.  Wishmaster 2 doesn’t do it any favors.  It tends to get boring a lot and doesn’t have the cool kills the first one had.  A couple of O-O scenes are good for fast forwarding to, but not much else makes it anything less than something to pop in when you just want white noise.

Day 1

Technically, last night was the 1st day, but let’s not split hairs.  The movie I watched was Tales From the Darkside: The Movie.

Tales From the Darkside: The Movie is, obviously, based on the Tales From the Darkside tv series.  Although I have seen the series, and thought some of the episodes were ok, the movie is much, much better.   It reminds me of Tales From the Crypt or even the Creepshow films.  A boy, kidnapped by a witch/crazy lady/cultist, reads to her from a book of scary stories.  The stories are adaptations of short stories by various authors.  The only one I’ve previously read is The Cat From Hell, a Stephen King short.  If not for any other reason, watch this movie for one in particular scene in The Cat From Hell.  You’ll know it when you see it, and comment below when you see it.

I also watched Wishmaster.  This was fun.  I think I may have seen it before, but I’m not sure.  I know I watched a clip once of a scene near the end, but some of it looked familiar.  Anyway, Alexandra acquires a giant red gemstone at her auction house.  The stone is a prison for an evil djin.  The djin awakens and spends the movie stalking her.  The djin’s power is dependent on wishes, he can only harm you if you make a wish.  The one who awakens him, has 3 wishes.  Once the 3rd wish is made, his power is limitless, or something.  Or maybe his world opens into ours..I don’t know.  Something like that.  There is plenty of gore, but they’re really creative kills.  Some of them.  A couple were just cheesy.

At the end of Day 1ish, and I realize that I have no idea how to write a blog about horror movies.  I don’t want it to be a straight up review, but I don’t know how to write about movies without it being a review.  And I’m trying not to put spoilers in, but if I do, I want a way to keep them easy for people to skip.  I don’t know.  I guess it just takes practice.  Anywho, for Day 2, I have a few movies I’m deciding to watch.
-Deadtime Stories
-Tales From the Crypt Bordello of Blood
-Wishmaster 2
-Dead Snow
I may go with Wishmaster 2, since this is the FearNet choice, and we all know how hit and miss FearNet is.  Who knows when I’ll get another chance.  Netflix has 3 and 4, but not 1 or 2.  So..Wishmaster 2, it is.

Blog Intro

I watch horror movies, a lot.  Growing up, I was raised in a conservative family, and horror movies weren’t something that was encouraged much.  But even as a kid, horror and supernatural genres were fascinating to me.  So, naturally, as soon as I got old enough to get away with it, me and horror movies began a very intimate relationship.

In the past 12-14 years, I’ve begun a slow attempt to make up for lost time.  I can’t, in good conscience, say that I’m an expert, who is on par with the usual horror “experts”.  Far from it.  There are classics that I’ve never seen.  For instance, I’m still working on getting aquainted with all Michael, Jason and Freddy movies.  I’ve been hit and miss, missing certain titles in each series.  It all comes to availability and time.
Having Netflix the past couple of years has helped a lot.

In my defense, though, they’ve never actually been my favorites.   Zombie movies, on the other hand, have had lots of screen time from me.  Also, unlike most horror aficionados, there are subgenres that I don’t watch.  Anything considered “torture porn”, is a big no-no from me.  Nothing against gore, gore is expected from many horror titles, it’s just that I’m too nice of a person.  That is, I can’t handle suffering.  Even if it’s just a movie, too much suffering, is too much.  I prefer my deaths quick.  Pain is expected, but for goodness sake, don’t draw it out.  I can’t even hide my eyes, because I can still hear screaming.  Therefore, the first Saw is the last of that series that I will ever watch.  Cannibal Holocaust?  Doesn’t exist to me.  The Human Centipede?  Centipede Schmentipede.  So, these types of movies will, most likely, never make it in my blog.  Unless I’m feeling particularly brave and horrifying that day.

The reason I chose 50 movies to theme this blog on,  is because for the past couple of years, I’ve been working on a list of horror movies that I’ve seen.  It’s an ongoing work in progress, made up of remembering past movies and logging movies as I watch them.  At this time, my list is now at 350.  I decided to make a challenge for myself of getting to 400, within a month.  Personally, I’m pretty sure it’s in the body bag.  Especially since I’m off work quite often this month.  Bad for my bank account, good for my list.  Anywho, stick around for the first official post.
